The Streaming Wars rage on with the $43 billion dollar merger of Discovery Inc. and AT&T’s WarnerMedia, as the two titans of entertainment aim to close the gap between themselves and frontrunners Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+.
Now, the newly minted Warner Bros. Discovery company controls the rights to the Belongings Brothers, Guy Fieri, and CNN in the unscripted market place, but likewise Game of Thrones, Batman, and Rick and Morty.
But what does that hateful for your existing HBO Max subscription, and volition yous have to fork over more cash to pay for the privilege of all this new content? We spoke to CNBC Media and Engineering science reporter, Alex Sherman, to learn more than most what’south in store for the new streaming giant.
Volition the Discovery/WB merger heighten the price of HBO Max?
At the time of writing, Discovery+ is currently available for $iv.99 a month with ads or $6.99 without, while HBO Max costs $ix.99 for an ad-supported version or $14.99 for the ad-gratis version. With Netflix’s peak-tier 4K HDR subscription package going for $xix.99 in the US, we wanted to know if the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming platform could exceed that threshold?
“My general answer on pricing and streaming services is ever yes,” Sherman told IGN. “Every streaming service price is going to go upwards. Just like your cable neb went up. That’south how the business works. And so anyone who thinks that information technology’southward non going to go upwardly is dreaming. They’re all going to go upwardly. And of course, they’re going to go up because they’re going to spend more money on content to compete with each other, so they’re going to need to make up their acquirement.”
Every streaming service cost is going to go up. Just like your cable bill went upwards.
Sherman went on to say that the toll increment is speculative at the moment since Warner Bros. Discovery boss, David Zaslav, hasn’t announced anything official withal. For now, Discovery+ and HBO Max are still split up entities with their own subscription plans; withal, Discovery CFO Gunnar Widenfels confirmed that the two streamers volition combine in the time to come to make one massive streaming platform.
HBO Max Spotlight: April 2022
But even with this new Warner Bros. Discovery streaming behemoth in the works, Sherman doesn’t believe the price increase will be severe.
“I certainly can’t envision something where information technology jumps up to over $twenty immediately,” Sherman said, adding, “that seems actually farfetched to me. So I would imagine there would be an incremental price increase hither by throwing all the Discovery+ stuff in information technology. Because you can at to the lowest degree requite customers a reason to increase the toll based on throwing all that stuff in, only you wouldn’t want to get in a lot of money because yous’d have to imagine that a lot of subscribers for HBO Max don’t want the Discovery stuff, right? Those things are not necessarily complementary products that way. If I’m watching Succession, I probably am non the aforementioned person who’due south watching The Cooking Channel. It’s a different audition.”
What Discovery+ shows coming to HBO Max are worth watching?
When Discovery+ launched in 2021, information technology was instantly crowned as the king of the unscripted streaming marketplace, with over 55,000 episodes to binge from major networks like The Food Network, HGTV, and BBC’south Natural History Collection.
So while you won’t get a thrilling new drama or express joy-out-loud comedy serial when the new Discovery Warner Bros. service launches, you will have access to the ultimate library for foodies, nature lovers, and habitation reno aficionados.
If I’g watching Succession, I’m probably not the aforementioned person watching The Cooking Channel. It’south a different audience.
Personally, I love nature shows, so classics such as BBC’s Planet Earth and The Bluish Planet are high on my list, likewise as David Attenborough’s A Perfect Planet and Judi Dench’southward Wild Kalimantan Adventure. If you’re more than into home repair and DYI projects, HGTV’s Stone the Block competition series and Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt’south 100 Day Dream Home series are likewise worth checking out.
What will the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service be called?
While streaming platform names may non be equally meaning equally dollars and cents when it comes to deciding which service to buy, it will be interesting to run across which proper noun the company decides to cull. Will they opt for another platform with a “+” fastened, or proceed the HBO Max branding the same?
“At present, what will that production be called? I don’t know,” Sherman informed IGN. “Volition they rename it away from HBO Max? Maybe. Maybe they feel like HBO Max is already out there long plenty now with a stiff enough brand that they won’t rename information technology and they’ll call it HBO Max. They certainly aren’t going to call it Discovery+, that I can tell you. And then, they’ll either rename it or they’ll proceed it HBO Max. I don’t know if it will wait different than what we know HBO Max looks like today, or if they’ll simply slot in the Discovery+ programming. We just don’t know the answers to those questions still.”
